I saw Moonrise Kingdom this week and was very inspired by the homespun look of the whole movie. My inner child is a 12 year old boy so I love everything about this movie’s story and art direction. I am not saying this as someone who has missed out. I was a Girl Scout team leader and then Girl Guide for many years and still collect badges today. Of course for me it has become quite obvious that activities I did in Girl Scouts were somewhat gendered and not as exciting or dangerous as what the boys did. But I’ve also been the most avid student at the Martha Stewart ‘University of Homemaking’ since her first PBS special so I love and appreciate what is often called ‘Woman’s Work’.

Here is a picture of my first piece inspired by the boy scout uniforms worn by the actors in Moonrise Kingdom. This one is a bot over 3 inches wide and if for a small vintage book bag I plan to make from 100 year-old homespun linen I received from Kiev, Ukraine on Monday. I also own two lovely linen shirts which are awaiting the up-cycling treatment. I am going to make one into a scout shirt therefore I will need a second Khaki Scouts of North America badge… however this one will NOT have NORTH AMERICA written upside down… Doh!
